DHL Express is part of the Deutsche Post DHL Group (DPDHL). DHL Express was founded in 1969 and pioneered the Express delivery industry. Globally DHL Express employs over 100,000 employees and operates in 220 countries and territories. In Australia, DHL Express operates 18 facilities across all states and territories in Australia, employing just under 1,100 employees. Its functions include; Customer Service, Finance, Operations, Commercial, Human Resources, IT and First Choice.

DHL Express’ main product is a guaranteed on-time international express delivery service. This means they will deliver documents and parcels door to door internationally in the quickest possible time or by a set date. DHL Express uses a fleet of courier vans, trucks and aircraft to pick up, transport and deliver customers’ shipments. Shipments are processed through their global network which includes facilities both on and off the airport. DHL’s global network operates in a standardised, efficient manner to deliver on their customer promise ‘Excellence. Simply Delivered’.

There are 4 Pillars which make up the DHL Express FOCUS Strategy: Motivated People; Great Service Quality; Loyal Customers; and, a Profitable Network. The objective of the FOCUS Strategy is to create a healthy, happy and hard working environment, where customer satisfaction is the primary goal. To achieve this, DHL Express aims to build a team of international specialists who are passionate and happy to serve the customers and look after each other.

DHL Express has a very diverse workplace and this diversity is an important part of the culture, such that Divesity@DHL Week, is conducted annually. This week involves a number of activities and events aimed at promoting and increasing awareness of diversity in the workplace. DHL Express has also invited key note speakers like Avril Henry to conduct a workshop with leaders to increase their awareness and allow them to use the knowledge gained in this workshop to improve attraction, recruitment and development strategies.

Currently 39% of management roles are filled by women. The organisation’s aspirational goal is to have 50% of roles occupied by women by 2020. To help achieve this aspiration, DHL Express has a Women in Management support group who attend network events and share ideas about how women can be supported in their roles in a male dominated industry such as theirs.

In 2019, DHL Express has also launched a new internal initiative called DHL4HER. The aim of this initiative, locally and globally, is to unleash the potential of female talent within the business. Creating the world’s most international women’s network and culminating in being recognised as the global ‘provider of choice’ for female talent.

DHL Express’ aim is to recruit the best people with the right attitude and the right skills. In addition to support from the local HR team, Managers have a number of resources available to them to assist with their recruitment via the Recruitment Toolkit and Interview Competency Guide.

To ensure employees have a positive start to their employment and that they embrace the culture, they receive a welcome package called ‘DHL in a Box’ which is hand delivered to them by a Courier or a Manager on their first day.
