Bialik College
Bialik College has been selected as an Employer of Choice in The Australian Business Awards 2019. The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations which have developed leading workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through practices that demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.
Bialik College began its existence modestly as a Sunday school and kindergarten in 1942, operating in North Carlton, which was then the principal centre of Melbourne’s Jewish population.
Today Bialik College is a flourishing cross-communal Jewish School based on a single campus in Hawthorn. The College caters for nearly 1000 students from three years of age kindergarten to VCE and employs approximately 250 staff. The College is unique as Melbourne’s only cross-communal school embracing the entire Jewish community regardless of affiliation or practice.
Bialik focuses on the worth of all people and celebrates diverse views and characteristics. It is not essential to be Jewish to work or study at Bialik. There is no advantage to being Jewish, however, there are many opportunities for non-Jewish staff to experience the Jewish culture and way of life.
Just as the College embraces all versions of Judaism, Bialik openly articulates a culture of inclusion and acceptance of all beliefs and value systems amongst the staff. Students and staff embrace the reality that there are different paths for different people.
Success for Bialik College is determined by four principle factors: student wellbeing, school rankings for VCE outcomes in Victoria, staff engagement and student enrolment.
In 20 of the past 21 years, Bialik has placed in the top five schools for VCE outcomes, and more recently has placed best in state for VCE outcomes in two out of the past three years, which is unrivalled by any other non-selective school in the state. Bialik prides itself on these spectacular results, particularly given that the College is a non-selective entry school.
As an employer, Bialik seeks to serve its staff by providing a workplace where people are passionate and committed to education and the College. This is evidenced by a low turnover of less than 10% in 2018. Bialik offers broad opportunities for professional learning and development, including domestic school camps and international trips overseas, to Israel and China. Bialik is committed to offering staff the opportunity to be at the forefront of educational thought, through its association with Harvard University’s Project Zero. Enrolments at Bialik are growing. In July 2019 Bialik will commence the operation of a Crèche to provide care for children from three months to pre Kinder.
As a not-for-profit independent school, Bialik takes great pride in its responsibility to the community and industry. A core focus of the College is to deliver consistently high quality education and success. However, an equally important responsibility that the College holds is to benefit society and community, whereby School Fee Assistance is offered to families who want a high quality education within a Jewish Cultural environment.
