Health Insurance Fund of Australia Limited (HIF)

Health Insurance Fund of Australia Limited (HIF) has been selected as an Employer of Choice in The Australian Business Awards 2025. The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations that develop workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices which demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.

HIF is a purpose-driven, not-for-profit health insurer dedicated to helping Australians live healthier lives. Established under the Private Health Insurance Act 2007 (Cth), HIF provides hospital and general treatment cover, overseas visitor health insurance, and travel insurance through a third-party arrangement. HIF combines the strength of a national insurer with the personal touch of a close-knit team of 120 employees, headquartered in Perth.

At its core, HIF exists to make health coverage affordable, transparent, and meaningful for members. Its purpose is clear: to help members live healthier lives by offering access to high-quality healthcare, providing clarity around cover, and delivering value-driven products and services.

The organisation is underpinned by five core values: Community, Member Value and Affordability, Integrity, Member for Life and Accountability. These values shape both the internal culture and the service provided to members. HIF’s workplace environment is collaborative, inclusive, and flexible. A flat hierarchy encourages open communication and shared accountability, while its family-first approach empowers employees to balance personal and professional commitments.

In FY24, HIF achieved Inclusive Employer certification from the Diversity Council of Australia and reported a significant improvement in gender equity, reducing its median gender pay gap from 18.4% to 11.4% in one year, well ahead of the industry average. Women now hold 71% of key management positions, compared to an industry average of 49%. These results highlight HIF’s commitment to fairness, equity, and opportunity.

HIF’s leadership practices emphasise authenticity, visibility, and shared accountability. Strategic goals are communicated openly, with performance progress transparently reported. Shared Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) connect employees at every level to outcomes such as member experience, engagement, retention, and safety.

Leadership development is prioritised through professional training, succession planning, and talent management. In 2025, HIF launched both a formal Mentoring Program and an Emerging Leadership Program, designed to build future leaders from within. Employee voice remains central to strategy, with initiatives such as monthly Community Halls, the peer-to-peer Heart Card recognition program (1,500 cards issued in FY25), and regular engagement surveys ensuring continuous feedback and improvement. Engagement results remain strong, with a 73% engagement score reflecting high levels of satisfaction, trust, and commitment among employees.

HIF also invests in the education and development of employees through its dedicated Learning Experience (LX) team of four professionals. Guided by the 70-20-10 learning model, employees benefit from practical on-the-job training, mentoring, and structured programs.

HIF maintains strong Work Health and Safety practices, including structured training, certified Fire Wardens and First Aid Officers, and regular drills in partnership with building management. Mandatory compliance training is complemented by scenario-based learning and interactive workshops to build confidence and preparedness.

Wellbeing initiatives extend across physical, mental, and social health. Employees have access to flu vaccinations, skin checks, resilience workshops, and mindfulness sessions. Psychosocial safety is also a priority, with leaders trained to identify risks and foster early intervention.

HIF stands apart as a health insurer that balances purpose, people, and performance. Its strong values, engaged workforce, and commitment to members and the community position it as a truly progressive Employer of Choice. HIF continues to build lasting relationships by providing value that matters – to members, employees, and the community.
