Standards Australia has been selected as an Employer of Choice in The Australian Business Awards 2023. The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations that develop workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices which demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.

Standards Australia is the nation’s leading independent, not-for-profit ‘standards development’ organisation.

Since 1922, more than 100 years ago, it has developed and published more than 15,000 standards in collaboration with thousands of industry experts across all sectors, establishing quality and safety specifications for products, services, and systems. The first and possibly most famous Australian Standard was created in 1922, mandating what bolts should be used on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Today, there are standards for every aspect of daily life.

Standards Australia prides itself on its warm, friendly, passionate, and engaged culture. Employees live and breathe its vision: ‘to be a global leader in trusted solutions that improve life today and tomorrow’ and its mission: ‘to empower communities’.

The organisation’s iCARE values (integrity, courage, accountable, respect, excellence) are the linchpin of success in its customer excellence, operational efficiency, and employee engagement. They are reflected in every aspect of operations from strategic development, leadership, recruitment and retention, learning and development, recognition and reward, and communication.

Its workforce and employer brand strategies are centred around attracting and retaining top talent through a flexible and family-friendly approach to work.

Employees are supported in developing to their full potential and rewarded for their achievements and contributions through various practices, including competitive remuneration, people perks/ benefits, reward and recognition, and training and development opportunities. For example, Standards Australia offers a flexible and generous People Perks program and Remote Work Policy, including:

Remote work. Employees can work from home with the flexibility of when they attend the office.

Nine-day fortnight. Employees have every second Friday off, without a reduction in pay.

Global working. Eligible employees can work remotely from an approved global location for up to three weeks per annum.

Growing family paid leave. Eligible primary and secondary caregivers receive 16 weeks and 4 weeks of paid parental leave, respectively.

Early access long service leave. Employees can access long service leave from five years of continuous employment, instead of 10 years.

Workiversary recognition and reward. Employee anniversaries are recognised and rewarded, with employees receiving a generous 10% of their base salary at five years of tenure.

People Perks and remote working has been a tremendous success, with employees sharing overwhelming positive feedback about its impact on work-life balance and engagement.

The organisation also has a passionate and vibrant Learning and Development team who are committed to supporting employees in developing to their full potential, which in turn promotes productivity, loyalty, engagement and contributes to the organisation’s high performance. The team have delivered an impressive 622 eLearn training courses and 583 instructor-led workshops to employees and stakeholders including onboarding, customer excellence, leadership, professional and personal development, mentorship, standards-specific, and systems training. The organisation also offers eligible employees study assistance to fund external training programs relevant to their role, such as degrees and private training.

To support a safe, secure, and supportive work environment Standards Australia have implemented various initiatives, including a dedicated work, health, and safety (WH&S) Committee that support, monitor and improve the organisation’s WH&S; mandatory WH&S training for all employees; a risk assessment framework to help mitigate physical and psychosocial hazards in the workplace; and a reporting system to help employees flag any safety matters or concerns.

Standards Australia’s work environment also promotes employee wellbeing, motivation, and satisfaction. For example, employees have access to a fun and free 12-month Health and Wellness Calendar to support, develop, and maintain healthy behaviours. They also promote various mental and health awareness events, including R U OK Day, free flu vaccinations and skin checks, access to its Employer Assistance Program and other resources to promote healthy physical and psychological wellbeing.
