RSL Queensland
RSL Queensland has been selected as an Employer of Choice in The Australian Business Awards 2023. The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations that develop workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices which demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.
RSL Queensland is a purpose-driven organisation developing and delivering services and programs that improve the lives of veterans and their families. Funding their work is the RSL Art Union, Australia’s largest and most successful not-for-profit prize home lottery.
Offering assistance, advice, and camaraderie through counselling, financial aid, accommodation, rehabilitation, education and other programs and initiatives, RSL Queensland delivers support services in person and online through a network of over 220 Sub Branches, regional offices, and the organisation’s wholly-owned subsidiary organisation Mates4Mates.
Leveraging new research and data to create innovative, next-gen services and delivery hubs, RSL Queensland is focused on reinventing traditional commemorations for the digital age, strengthening connections with and within the veteran community, and providing a strong policy voice on behalf of all generations of veterans and their families.
In RSL Queensland’s 2022 employee engagement survey, 93 per cent of respondents agreed they tell others great things about working at RSL Queensland. Eighty-nine per cent of respondents agreed they would not hesitate to recommend RSL Queensland as an employer. These numbers truly reflect the RSL Queensland workforce, as 89 per cent of employees completed the survey. For many years, RSL Queensland has earned those accolades by cultivating a values-driven, people-first culture. In 1916, RSL Queensland was formed to support veterans residing in Queensland who were returning or had returned from war.
Over 100 years later, and now powered by the RSL Art Union, Australia’s biggest prize home lottery, RSL Queensland continues to deliver counselling, financial aid, accommodation, rehabilitation, and education support services to veterans through the organisation’s network of over 220 Sub Branches across the state.
RSL Queensland’s positive impact on the Defence community and its highly successful prize home lottery is enabled by a highly engaged workforce that is invested in the organisation’s culture and its purpose and guided by a simple strategic plan that clearly explains how each employee contributes to improving the lives of veterans and their families.
From the very start, RSL Queensland invests in its people through its personalised, hands-on onboarding program. That investment continues through the employee lifecycle with generous learning and development opportunities, including a Study Assistance Scheme, tailored development programs for emerging and established leaders, and generous service milestone payments.
Employees and their families matter at RSL Queensland. The organisation prides itself on its flexible working arrangements, which allow employees to work from home and complete their work at a time that suits their family schedule. Throughout the year, employees have access to a free assistance program that provides round-the-clock support for health and safety concerns, work issues, financial issues and relationship and family matters. In the office, RSL Queensland provides snacks and drinks, a popular Peer Support Program, and all employees can access confidential support and guidance from the organisation’s team of HR Business Partners.
Safety matters, too. RSL Queensland’s commitment to workplace health, safety and wellbeing is robust, specialised, award-winning, and highly appreciated – 98 per cent of respondents agreed that workplace safety and security are taken seriously at RSL Queensland.
RSL Queensland celebrates and recognises a job well done. In 2022, over 80 per cent of employees received an incentive payment reflecting their hard work. The organisation takes every possible opportunity to reward its employees going the extra mile, with quarterly trips to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, monthly bonuses for employees who embody the organisational values, and a daily focus on celebrating employees who do it with heart and stand shoulder to shoulder with the Defence community and each other.
