McInnes Wilson Lawyers has been selected as an Employer of Choice in The Australian Business Awards 2023. The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations that develop workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices which demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.

McInnes Wilson Lawyers is an award-winning national law firm in the Australian legal industry. Established in 1975, the firm has grown to a practice of 46 principals and over 300 staff in six office locations, including Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Maroochydore. The firm prides itself on providing technically excellent, tailored legal services and delivering value to our clients through a diverse and well-experienced workforce. McInnes Wilson Lawyers is a prominent member of an international group called GlobaLaw, a worldwide network of over 80 independent law firms across more than 70 jurisdictions employing over 3,000 solicitors in over 130 cities. The firm’s vision is to be a full-leading service legal and advisory company and employer of choice, with international affiliations and a commitment to quality client service, value, and responsiveness.

McInnes Wilson Lawyers has created a culture and work environment where its employees are stimulated to reach their full potential at work and in their personal lives. The firm encourages every employee to be part of a learning organisation proactively. McInnes Wilson Lawyers is committed to enhancing its people’s capabilities through the facilitation of various development programs and initiatives, including:

  • ‘Reach Your Peak’ Leadership Development Program gives senior leaders the skills and knowledge to engage, inspire, motivate, communicate, and empower employees to achieve their best.
  • Mentoring Program provides participants with career guidance and professional support from senior leaders that encourages personal and professional growth.
  • Supervised Workplace Traineeship provides law graduates with an in-house 12-month traineeship designed according to legislated admission requirements.
  • Continuing Legal Education (CLE) provides fortnightly sessions to assist practitioners in remaining up to date with legislative changes and industry standards.
  • Legal Services Traineeship provides entry-level administration-related positions to complete a Certificate III qualification and promotion opportunities.
  • Study Sponsorship provides financial support for the completion of post-graduate studies.

Evidence collected through participant testimonials and feedback programs indicates their people receive these initiatives positively. This evidence underpinned the firm’s award submission for Lawyers Weekly – Law Firm of the Year 2022, which ultimately saw the firm announced as a named finalist for the second consecutive year.

McInnes Wilson Lawyers sets the conditions for every employee to have a healthy, mutually supportive work-life balance. MCW has introduced flexible work to give employees meaningful control over when, where, and how work is accomplished. The firm recognises that being an employer of choice requires a culture where working flexibly is business as usual. This initiative has increased the uptake of and support for flexible work arrangements through home-based work agreements, part-time work, paid study leave and sabbatical leave. The 2023 Insider Views Employee Engagement Survey indicates engagement levels are boosted through job satisfaction, career development and opportunities, a healthy and safe work environment and diversity and inclusion. The overall average employee satisfaction rating resulted in 8.4 out of 10. These results are attributed to the firm’s progressive focus on developing and supporting its workforce and enhancing and improving the workplace.

Notably, the firm has newly been awarded the Workplace Gender Equality Agency’s Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (EOCGE) citation. This citation effectively recognises the firm’s active commitment and efforts to achieving gender equality both in Australian workplaces and the legal industry.
