Inner West Council

Inner West Council has been selected as an Employer of Choice in The Australian Business Awards 2023. The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations that develop workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices which demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.

It’s a great honour to be recognised as an ABA Employer of Choice.

This award highlights our achievements in embedding our Purpose and Values in all aspects of our work, the success of our Traineeships, Authentic Leader and Reward and Recognition programs, and our commitment to WHS and wellbeing.

I’m incredibly proud of all our people. This accolade reflects the hard work of our People & Culture team, and the commitment of all our staff to making Inner West Council a great place to work.

This recognition really proves we are a culture-driven organisation that puts our people, customers and the community we serve at the heart of everything we do.

But this is also just the start! We’ve laid a strong foundation and we will continue to build our culture, invest in our people and deliver on our Purpose and Values.

Peter Gainsford, General Manager, Inner West Council

The Inner West Council is located on the western edge of the Sydney CBD and is a place of culturally diverse, progressive inner-city communities and neighbourhoods. Culture, leadership and strategy drive Inner West Council’s vision, mission and values.

Council’s service delivery responsibilities are broad, with responsibility for developing and managing local community infrastructure and facilities such as sporting facilities, parks and recreation places, environmental management, health and safety and emergency management. Other community supports such as libraries, early learning centres, community programs such as arts, culture, volunteering, and social programs and events are delivered every day. Services such as resource recovery and waste services, landscape and streetscape maintenance, delivering major capital works and planning and managing change within the built and physical environment all combine to create diverse employment opportunities and development.

As a learning organisation, the Council’s Employee Value Proposition reflects the rewards and benefits that employees are offered in return for their skills, performance and productivity. The Council values are the basis of the rewards and recognition that are assessed within individual performance plans. Wherever practical, staff and teams are rewarded and recognised at the time of achievement. Equal employment opportunity and gender equity are also maintained as part of the workplace strategy, and Council has a progressive rewards and recognition program.

There is a direct investment in staff, professionally and personally, from the first day of employment. Employee development, traineeships and leadership development are key priorities to drive improved customer service, staff engagement and organisational productivity. Over 1,000 education and training programs are available annually to employees to enhance and develop their roles and expand their skills.

There is a strong focus on continuous improvement with health, safety and wellbeing programs and supports. A focus on innovation and automation reduces the risk of workplace injury. Free health checks and vaccinations are made available for employees each year. Accredited mental health first aiders are trained and available for initial support. Wellbeing programs such as the Fitness Passport, monthly Wellbeing themes focusing on issues and supports for addictions, parenting support, mental health and menopause, crisis counselling and domestic violence supports are well entrenched.

Flexible work and leave and working from home arrangement support employees in developing a good work/ life balance. These support high levels of Inner West Council employee satisfaction and retention as the Council serves its community, making it a great place to be.
