The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations that develop workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices which demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.

Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment (CBLA) is a vibrant, growing organisation that prides itself on being an employer of choice. CBLA runs OET™ (the Occupational English Test) which is the world’s only global English language test for healthcare professionals, recognised by over 200 organisations globally. Since 2013 CBLA has experienced growth of over 700% and during that time has seen an increase of non-casual staff from 30 to over 110.

CBLA’s vision is to connect the world to better healthcare and the five company values are; excellence always, I am because you are, one team one mission, inspired to innovate and communicate openly. As historically a very small organisation, CBLA is characterised by an innovative culture. A smaller, flatter structure assists in communication as they are an organisation that operates at great speed. Having an engagement score of 87% in 2021 highlights the strong connection to their people.

CBLA is very focused on education, training and development with opportunities offered across a wide range of platforms. In 2022 a new Learning Management System through Go1 (OET Staff Learning Centre) was launched which provides access to over 90,000 online courses. In addition, the Leadership Team have access to an online virtual seminar platform called Growth Faculty which has both live events and on demand content to support leadership development.

CBLA also offers face to face opportunities through training programmes for people managers on a wide range of topics including crucial conversations and coaching. All staff have the ability to shape their own training with an all staff training survey where teams could nominate what training they would like to receive and how it would connect with their role and the organisation. There are also regular all staff skills training in the form of Lunch & Learns and presentations from external consultants ranging on topics from time management to mental wellbeing.

CBLA recognise the importance of rewarding their staff and this is achieved through a number of pathways. Regular remuneration benchmarking activities are undertaken to ensure that they remain competitive in the market. Staff are eligible for both an annual base salary remuneration review and an annual short term incentive program which is tied in to organisational, departmental and individual goals. In addition to remuneration, there is also recognition via Quarterly Awards to recognise both individual and team-based achievement.

CBLA is committed to the health and safety of it’s staff and offers support through a number of different avenues.
