BioMar

BioMar has been selected as an Employer of Choice in The Australian Business Awards 2021. The Australian Business Award for Employer of Choice [EOC] recognises organisations that develop workplaces that maximise the full potential of their workforce through established policies and practices which demonstrate effective employee recruitment, engagement and retention.

“BioMar Pty Ltd has developed a new Aquafeed mill in Tasmania’s North-West. As part of the start-up we have engaged and trained over 55 staff, most of whom were on-boarded during the COVID affected year of 2020. Ensuring we had the right culture, strategy and training led to our success over the past 18 months as a new business. Having the right performance, recognition and safety mechanisms in place meant that BioMar could attract and build a safe and rewarding workforce and working environment. BioMar Globally is built on innovation, sustainability, performance and collaboration. The Tasmanian business unit has sought to be a leader in these attributes.

“We have been able to successfully build and operate a $65million AUD factory all within the COVID affected environment. This has been a result of all employees within the organisation engaging and building a successful business and business structure. BioMar thanks and congratulates all its employees who have helped to achieve these outstanding results.”

Nick Hutchinson, Human Resource Manager, BioMar

BioMar is a global aquaculture feed manufacturing company that focuses on performance, sustainability, innovation, and cooperation. In late 2017, Denmark based BioMar, opened an Australian business unit, based in regional Tasmania, to service the rapidly expanding Australian aquaculture industry.

BioMar acts as an industry leader across several areas including sustainability, performance, and innovation, via several sustainability initiatives and a global strategy linked to the 5 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as well as undertaking a rigorous product development program and benchmarking initiatives to ensure that each product the company manufactures has the highest possible economic performance.

BioMar has several research facilities across the globe and it partners with local Australian and New Zealand fisheries, customers, and universities to validate its feed value. BioMar employs dedicated technical staff to work onfarm alongside customers to ensure best feed practices are upheld.

BioMar are powered by long-term partnerships with suppliers, customers, government, and educational institutions.

The aquaculture feed production industry in Australia is a relatively small industry. The skills, knowledge, and education to successfully operate a complex business like BioMar are limited within Australia with an estimated 600 people working in the industry. As a new business in Australia, the management knew that it would need to rapidly attract staff with transferrable skills and then develop the talent to be a successful competitor within the Australian market.

As a result of the pandemic, local customer demand increased rapidly and by October 2020 BioMar were operating at capacity within the shift structure, producing approximately 8000 tons of feed a month to support customers who were heavily affected by COVID19. This was all within what many businesses have described as the hardest year of operation – affected by COVID19. In addition, BioMar were able to respond to customer needs as a large biomass of salmon remained in farms, unable to be sold domestically or through exports.

This incredible achievement is attributable to the amazing employees in BioMar Australia and the systems and support given to that workforce.
