Carlton Football Club (the Club) is one of Australia’s oldest and most prominent elite sporting institutions. With a history spanning 157 years and 16 Premierships, Carlton is the equal most successful Club in the history of the Australian Football League (AFL).
Situated on Wurrundjeri land within its homeland of Carlton North, Melbourne and amongst the picturesque Princes Park, Carlton is one of the few AFL Clubs that remains based within their geographical birthplace. The Club was one of the first eight clubs to form an AFLW (women’s) team and was a Grand Finalist in the 2019 AFLW season.
Carlton employees approximately 170 people to support the operations of the Club which includes football programs in the AFL, VFL, AFLW and VFLW with a total of 133 players proudly representing the Navy Blues. Currently, 40% of the Club, including players, are women.
In 2019, the Club set about re-building its home ground to become the first fully integrated facility in the AFL, whereby male and female athletes would have identical quality facilities, in close proximity to each other and equally sharing in all support services. This ambition was supported by both state and federal government. Diversity, education, health, wellbeing, equality, inclusion and safety have been at the forefront of the new facility development and no female athlete will ever walk into the Carlton Football Club again and feel any sense of inequality.
In addition to the world-class AFL and AFLW changerooms, gymnasium and medical facility, the redevelopment also includes a prayer room, a carers and breastfeeding room for parents and a quiet room for meditation and focus. To support connection between staff and players, a shared dining room facility has been built which everyone can use, along with a state-of-the-art gymnasium and aquatic centre, with robust end of trip facilities designed to promote exercise as part of everyone’s daily routine at the Club.
